Sophia and I are heading to our 1:00 p.m. Biology class with Dr. Huntley. Biology is one of my weakest subjects, and the threat of a low grade in this class has me on edge. It doesn’t help matters that Huntley seems to hate me because of my last name.

A memory of that exchange during our first class has butterflies flapping in my stomach.

Huntley introduced himself and then took role call. He was steadily moving along, firing names off, but suddenly paused for a few beats before calling out, “Alexis Morgan-Whitmore.” The way his voice said Whitmore made me cringe. It was as though he’d eaten something bad.

I raised my hand and said, “It’s Alexis Morgan.”

Huntley’s brows lowered as he looked at his laptop screen, then back to me. “That’s not what it says on my sheet.”

I sighed. “That’s because my stepfather insisted I use his last name.”

“Ah, I see.” He glowered at me for a moment, making me squirm. “So, you’re Preston Whitmore’s stepdaughter.” The muscles in his jaw twitched as he stared at me with hatred in his dark eyes.

“Not legally. But he married my mom.”

“I see.”

Luckily, the class was short. After introducing himself and explaining our syllabus, he told us to do the assignment for the next class and let us go.

Sophia pulls me from my thoughts. “It’ll be okay, Lexi.”

I’m stressing over this assignment, hoping I got the answers correct. Sophia and I compared them during lunch, and I felt pretty confident until we started heading to class. If we got any of them wrong, I have a sinking feeling that Huntley will pick on me rather than Sophia.

“Lexi. Wait.” Footsteps sound behind me. I turn around, smiling when I see Bentley running toward me.

“Hey.” I flash him a smile. “What’s up?”

He stops in front of me, taking in my change of clothing. “You look comfortable and cute in that outfit.”

I laugh. “Thanks. My feet feel a lot better, too.” I gesture toward my favorite pair of worn Converse sneakers.

“I like em.” He shifts his backpack on his shoulder and cocks his head. I’m on high alert, knowing I won’t like whatever he’s about to say. “So… Are things okay with you and Professor Whitmore?”

Oh, shit. I study Bennett’s face intently, seeing questions all over it. He knows something is up.

I exchanged a look with Sophia. I grab Bennett’s arm and pull him from the crowded sidewalk to a tree that offers some privacy from curious student ears. Exhaling a shaky breath, I give him a bright smile. “Things are fine. He’s my stepbrother and a bit overprotective. He thinks it’s his job to watch over me.”

Bennett’s smile is brighter than the afternoon sun, making my stomach sink. What will I do if he asks me out again?

He shifts his weight, his knuckles turning white as he clings to the strap of his backpack. “I was wondering….”

Oh, shit. Please, no.

Next thing I know, Bennett is shoved back by a fuming Evan. “Leave. Now,” he spits, his face so angry he looks like an unhinged psycho.
